For fifty years, Cape Fox Corporation (CFC) has worked toward supporting our shareholders and our communities. Over the last few years, CFC has been able to do more toward caring for our communities through grants that provide educational and cultural support and by advancing technological services to our shareholders and the Saxman and Ketchikan communities. Last year the CFC grant program grew significantly with grants for the Cape Fox Cultural Foundation (CFCF) and we are projecting even greater growth of this program this year.

There are many grants offered to programs that are willing to do the work. Jamie White is responsible for the CFCF grants program. She researches the best grants that will support the community and then creates a plan and puts the grants into action. Recently, our CFC Communications team interviewed Jamie White about how she decides which grants would benefit the company, our shareholders, and the community and what she hopes for the future of the CFC grants program.

What is the CFCF’s mission as it relates to grants?

The Cape Fox Cultural Foundation (CFCF) strives to deliver educational and cultural services to the public in order to preserve and support the heritage, culture, and future of the CFC community and Southeast Alaska region and to provide unique, focused programs and services to help disadvantaged or struggling members of the Southeast Alaska region become thriving members of their families, communities, and society in whole. CFCF seeks grants that help to fulfill our mission of delivering cultural and educational services to the community.

What types of grants does CFCF try to win?

Currently CFCF has been applying for grants that will help to get CFCF’s Cultural Center ready to host community members for cultural workshops, gatherings, and heritage projects. This includes grants for furnishings, health, and safety supplies, as well as workshop supplies and tools.

What grants were obtained in 2022 and 2023?

  • 2022 – “Museums Alaska Emergency Collections Management Fund 2022”- $16,000
  • 2023 – “Rasmuson Foundation Tier 1”- $10,000
  • 2023 – “Museums Alaska Collections Management Fund 2023”- $20,000
  • “Alaska Council on the Arts Community Arts Development Grant” -$4,600

How will the work be achieved by these grants?

The Rasmuson Foundations Tier 1 award has helped us to provide the furniture, workstations, safety supplies, and storage equipment needed in the Cultural Center, and the Alaska Council on the Arts Community Arts Development Grant will help us to purchase supplies and materials for Beadwork and Regalia workshops.

What is your ultimate goal for CFCF and its Grants Program?

To see CFCF’s mission continuously fulfilled by providing services and resources to the community and for the Cultural Center to be able to offer year-round accessibility to community members and be established as a permanent cultural resource for Saxman residents and surrounding community members.

What do you want people to see, feel, and experience when they visit CFCF’s Cultural Center?

We want visitors of the Cultural Center to see generations sharing and learning from one another. We want them to feel the love for the culture and traditions. We want to bring the community together in a space where they experience programs and workshops that enrich their lives.
